UNLV Legend Armen Gilliam died Tuesday night at the age of 47 of a heart attack while playing pickup basketball in a gym of Pittsburgh area. Death occurs within nine days of NC State legend Lorenzo CharlesGilliamdied in a motor vehicle accident in Raleigh, North Carolina.?
Gilliam had a large College & career (credit: David Petkiewicz, Arizona Republic)Nicknamed "the hammer" for his physical game Gilliam UNLV led to a record of 93-11 during his 3 seasons it culminating in a 37-2 season in 1987, which ended in the final four appearance. Gilliam was a second team all-American and big West player of the year while scoring 903 points (still a record of the season at UNLV) while the average 23.2 PPG, 9.3 RPG as a senior. After his senior year Gilliam was 2 in the NBA draft as a whole select 1987 behind David Robinson. In his 13 seasons in the NBA average Gilliam 13.7 PPG and 6.9 RPG, while for 6 different NBA teams.
Gilliam Jersey was inducted into UNLV Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998 and his Jersey retired by the school in 2007.?Heard about Gilliam death, his former coach Jerry Tarkanian said, "he was one of the biggest rebellion ever and one of the best players we ever had." Armon, I had my reviews of Larry Johnson No. 1 and no. 2. He was such a great person. Everyone loved him, and he loved everyone. He was a gentle person and as a caring guy. I'm all shook up about it. "I think the world of it and am only really shocked."
